The smoking ban had just come into force in the city. I was staying near Bon Marché, the big department store in the 7th arrondissment. A common sight was workers in their smart uniforms sitting outside the store having their cigarette break.
I found the choreography of smoking quite fascinating, the shapes formed, and the faraway, dreamy expressions of the women as they smoked.
